To really, truly love who we are, we have to know ourselves. And I do not mean that frilly, all-types-of-only-goodness kind of love, either. I am talking about the raw emotion of love. The one that sees you in your darkest moments and wraps you in warmth – and the one that shows up when you are beaming with joy.

But we don’t just love ourselves, do we? We tend to feel good and talk self-love when things are going well or when we do something great, right? But when we find ourselves dealing with a bad decision or a weak moment, self-hate talk is what takes over.

We cannot love ourselves on a good day and hate ourselves on a bad one. That is not how this works.

To truly discover loving feelings again, it starts with ourselves; it starts with self-love. That means you will have to cultivate self-awareness to get to know who you are. After all, you can only love someone unconditionally if you know them deeply. Not to mention that having a strong sense of self-awareness also brings a greater amount of self-confidence which results in stronger communication, stronger relationships, and so on.

So, how do we cultivate self-awareness? Well, there is no quick fix to doing so. The best thing you can do for yourself is to spend time getting to know you. When you feel a certain way, react a certain way, or have a repetitive thought, take the time to address it. Try to determine why you feel the way you do – and do this without judgment.

You will have strengths and weaknesses. We all do. Just as you try to figure out the important people in your life or a new love interest, learn all about yourself. When you discover something you don’t like, approach it from a position of love and acceptance – no hate.

I will share a new way in which you can discover loving feelings again. Do not forget to check back each week! You will not want to miss it. Come on - who would not want to swell with love?

Today, let’s just say that the first step in feeling loving feelings again comes from knowing yourself – and the pain you’ve experienced – and working through it. Address it, journal it, talk about it with someone you trust. You cannot fill your heart with love when it is too crowded from all the pain.

Free yourself.
